“Manila is a city of extremes, and at a time that only the extreme makes an impression, it still manages to shock. To wander into its streets, to be among the crowds, to be caught in the din of history that barrages you at every corner is to participate in a drama that began centuries ago, but whose cries and whispers echo resound well into the present. The sacred and the profane, the amatory smiles and the feral gaze are all on display here, as the unforgiving sun of its days give way to the artificial neon of night.”
Erwin Romulo, 2014

At ARNDT Singapore’s group exhibition of contemporary Filipino artists “Manila: The Day is Scornful, The Night is Restless”, Manila-based curator Norman Crisologo takes us on a tour around the vibrant capital of the Philippines. By juxtaposing works of acknowledged artists of the older generation with the practice of the up and coming ones, Crisologo presents us the most accurate picture of contemporary art in Manila, a city of extremes and shifting artistic landscapes. The exhibition creates a new platform for discussion about the state of the arts in the Philippines and its relationship with tradition, religion, film noir, pop imagery, contemporary urban culture and the culture clash that happens in between.

The exhibition includes works by the following artists: Mike Adrao, Gabriel Barredo, Zean Cabangis, Jigger Cruz, Alfredo Esquillo Jr., Dexter Fernandez, Kawayan De Guia, Jose Legaspi, Pow Martinez, Alwin Reamillo, Norberto Roldan, Jose Tence Ruiz, Tatong Torres, Santiago Bose.

The group show also marks ARNDT Singapore’s opening of their second gallery space at Gillman Barracks. The exhibition is distributed over both locations: Block 22, and Block 9 on the 3rd floor.
