Kamayan Filipino Friendsgiving Feast
Time:
Description
Celebrate Friendsgiving sans turkey and utensils in a non-traditional way through this communal dining experience called “kamayan”, meaning “with hands”. This will be a time set aside intentionally for gratitude alongside an interactive cultural meal shared in an unconventional way as hands and banana leaves take the place of utensils and plates. The entire meal will be presented and spread upon a banana leaf-covered table and guests will feast with their hands on an array of traditional Filipino dishes, family-style. It is indeed a unique way to foster community and togetherness this Thanksgiving season!
We will gather in a beautiful loft space in the heart of Old Town Pasadena. As we sit in unity at one very long table, the evening will begin with a mental gratitude exercise led by Salamat Yoga, encouraging full presence during this multi-sensory dinner experience as the five senses are engaged – those of sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. Come ready to immerse yourself in Filipino culture and cuisine and experience the warmth of Filipino hospitality. And make new foodie friends along the way!
To be served, classic homestyle dishes prepared by traditional Filipino cooks: Chicken Adobo, Pork Belly Sisig, Beef Steak, Sweet & Sour Fish Fillet, Sitaw & Kalabasa Vegetables, Pansit, Lumpia, Cassava Cake. White Rice and beverages are also included.
Basic Kamayan Guidelines:
1. Wash your hands!
2. Try to eat mostly with one hand, keeping the second hand clean for drinking.
3. When taking food, grab a bit of rice along with a bit of “ulam” (the meat and/or vegetables) and use your fingers to pinch the food into a clump at your fingertips (don’t let it settle onto your palm).
4. Lift your hand towards your mouth while leaning your head forward and use your thumb to push the food into your mouth. Eat and enjoy!
Also, we will have dinner hosts available throughout the night to take photos for you on your phone so that you can show off this fun culinary adventure!
