Offer a 5-Session Adult Conversational Filipino, Level 3 Program this Summer!

There will be one site: Manhattan (Thursday evenings).

MANHATTAN: Beginning on July 24, 2014 and ending on August 14, 2014 (no class July 3), the classes will meet once a week every Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 524 W. 59th Street (between 10/11th Avenue), Room 10.72, Manhattan, NY.

This course continues where Level II left off. Each one is encouraged to take an active part in class. The willingness to make mistakes, a process that enables one to learn faster and more thoroughly, is vital to the learning process.

The classes will further articulate grammar principles and vocabulary building. We will practice that knowledge in daily conversation, while further developing the ability to use more complex sentences using verbs.

We will continue to use an interactive approach (role playing, dialogue building, games, etc) to increase your confidence and ease in conversing in the Filipino language. For immersion, we will spend conversation time (kuwentuhan) with a few members of the Filipino community who are native speakers of the language. This one session is likely to occur on a weekend (Sunday or Saturday). Details to follow.

The instructor will be handing out supplementary materials as the course unfolds.

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

1. FUNCTIONAL SKILLS:
Sustain simple conversation in the following social situations:
a. expressing simple discomforts
b. asking and giving directions
c. buying, haggling, ordering meals

2. LINGUISTIC SKILLS:
Use the following grammatical items with some facility:
a. Questions words (ano, sino, saan, nasaan, kailan, bakit)
b. Basic actor (-um-, mag-, ma-) and object focus (-in, i-) verbs
c. Existentials and possessives (may / mayroon / wala)
d. Helping verbs (gusto / ayaw / puwede)
e. Expanded basic sentences with connectors (at, pero, kasi)

3. Get to know each other in the spirit of trust and collective fun.

This course will be taught by Agnes “Bing” Magtoto, known in the Filipino community of NY for her expertise in Philippine language and culture and for teaching this course to many students over the years. She is currently Adjunct Professor teaching Elementary Filipino I & II, a language and culture course at NYU. Bing is also an awardee of the 2012 The Outstanding Filipino Americans in New York award in Education, Research and Technology!

Bing has developed training modules using creative processes as a participatory and experiential approach to learning, organizing and programming. She is creative pedagogy facilitator who has conducted cultural and people’s theater workshops throughout the Philippines, US, Canada Europe and Asia. Bing is also a stage and film actor. Tuition for the 5-week course is $250.00/person plus an additional $50 registration fee to cover administrative costs (a total of $300). (This is much lower than the average cost of similar programs in the area.) Enrollment is limited to ten (10) students per class, so applicants are requested to sign up early. Registration will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. A diagnostic test will be given to registered students prior to the start of class.

Required reading material must be purchased in advance before classes begin. This includes Conversational Tagalog: A Functional Situational Approach by Teresita Ramos (University of Hawai’i Press) which can be purchased at almost any major bookstores or online through Amazon.com. Additional reference materials and hand-outs will be provided by the instructor during class.
